BRIEF HISTORY
Province of Davao Oriental
| Province of Davao Oriental was created on July 1, 1967 under Republic Act 4867. It is located in the Easternmost part of Region 11. It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the East, Davao Province in the West, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur in the North and Davao Gulf and Celebes Sea in the South. Which comprises 516,446 hectares representing 16.26 percent of the total land area of Region 11 to which the province belongs and 1.72 percent of the total area of the Philippines. |

Early Spanish exploration of Davao area can be traced back to 1543 when Villalobos visited the Sarangani in the southwestern entrance to the DavaoGulf. He coasted along the shores of Davao Oriental where he established the first settlement, which is Caraga. Implying that Davao Oriental is the oldest settlement in the region. This long time proclamation prompted the resistance of Oriental Davaoenos when Region 13 was proclaimed as Caraga Region. It is also for this reason that pioneer Davaoenos of Davao has roots in Davao Oriental like Pichon, Claveria, Villa-Abrille, Tiongco, Garcia and many others.
The missionaries from the 16th to the 19th centuries of the Philippine History, who were sent for mission to this island called "CaragaProvince "in 1609 ranging from the tip of Surigao to CapeSt. Augustine of Sigaboy. Later It is composed of Eleven (11) municipalities namely:

| BANAYBANAY, LUPON, SAN ISIDRO, GOVERNOR GENEROSO, TARRAGONA, MANAY, CARAGA, BAGANGA, CATEEL, BOSTON and MATI as its capital. Among these municipalities, BAGANGA has the largest area with 117,708 hectares and SAN ISIDRO is the smallest area with 20,520 hectares. It has 183 barangays and a total population of 495,827 based on 2000 Census. The province is characterized as follows: Extensive Mountain ranges with uneven distribution of plateaus and swamps and lowlands, it is also richly endowed with navigable rivers.
